With Google circles being completely hidden from view, there is inherent value lost from the curation which happens during the everyday Google+ experience.
As a bit of a fun coding project over the weekend, I decided to quickly hack together a solution for publicly sharing Google+ circles. With the web being ever so slightly obsessed with this information, and the data being hidden – I thought that the functionality for sharing the people you follow on this platform had to be easier.
With no public API, or other simplistic way to do this, I took a look at the information that is readily available to all users within the Google+ ecosystem – and Google Takeout information seemed to be a logical place to start. It turned out to be invaluable in the more automated process of re-building your circle information on a more public platform. Using the vCard format which can easily be downloaded from Takeout, I was able to build sets of public circles from my information, and present them on individual URLs.
All you have to do, is build your circle inside Google+, take-out your information, extract the circle you want to share publically, and add it to the service. After you’ve added it, information can then be shown on a simple list, with links back to those you’ve created.
Perfect for when you want to share a list of ‘Googlers‘ for example.
The project could definitely do with a good bit of tidy up, I literally bashed it together in a couple of hours, but hopefully it will be of use to some of you anyway. From a privacy point of view, Google don’t save email addresses when you takeout your information (otherwise you’d be able to follow celebs and get their email addresses), so the most you’ll be sharing with (me) and the application is a name and a URL.
